THE HOME I NEVER KNEW
Art Statement
Ten years after the artist left her home country, she recalled the stories her father shared about Venezuela’s extraordinary natural wonders—places she had never had the chance to visit. She realized that she had never truly appreciated her home until she left, and she was curious to learn more. Unfortunately, due to the worsening political situation and remote locations, most Venezuelans will only see these places in photos and videos.
The dreamlike scenes are based on Venezuela’s landscapes and are shown in an abstract way. The videos show colourful paintings with shadow silhouettes inspired by well-known natural locations and icons in Venezuela. Based on reference images and inspired by her dad’s travels across Venezuela in the 1980s, the installation explores the emotional connections we make with places. It reflects on the idea that the only true distance is physical.
Nuit Blanche Toronto
This video art installation highlights the distant landscapes of Venezuela. This installation explores emotional connections to places and the evolving significance of home.‘The Home I Never Knew’ was part of Nuit Blanche Toronto 2024 on October 5 at 3 Lower Jarvis St. Four unique videos played in synchrony during the 12-hour event. The total projection surface measured approximately 109 ft by 20 ft. Editing was done in Premiere Pro, while MadMapper was used to map the installation on the terrace of the School of Design building at 3 Lower Jarvis St.
Future Ways of Living Gallery
Due to the positive feedback, the installation was extended and moved to the Future Ways of Living Gallery inside the building for an extended period. The video projection was adapted to the space, and the original paintings were shown.
Congress
The project was featured as an art exhibition at the Congress 2025 of the Humanities and Social Sciences, showcasing original paintings and a short film (mentioned below) at the Limberlost Building.
130 QQE
‘The Home I Never Knew’ was granted the Art Wall showcase, where the video was showcased in the lobby of the 130 QQE Office Condominiums.
